West Bengal Sees An Increase In Adenovirus Instances; Symptoms, Treatment, And Safety Measures

Health officials in Bengal have been urged to exercise caution after the state saw a sharp increase in adenovirus cases, which caused pediatric wards in both state-run and private institutions to quickly fill up. According to health authorities, the virus has been detected in at least 32% of samples sent to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) in Kolkata since January. Adenovirus, which can produce a mild cold-like illness in people of all ages, has not yet been officially identified as the cause of the deaths of two children who passed away on February 19: a six-month-old boy and a 2.5-year-old girl.

What are the Symptoms?

Acute gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, and other relatively mild symptoms like a cold or the flu, a fever, and a sore throat can also appear in infected individuals. Even though the latter is comparatively infrequent, adenovirus can cause both mild and severe illnesses. Adenoviruses can cause serious illness in people who have weakened immune systems, underlying respiratory or cardiac conditions, or both.

What are the Transmissions?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, the virus is typically spread through physical contact with an infected individual. Additionally, it can be transmitted through the air (through sneezes and coughs) or a patient’s feces, such as when changing diapers.

What is the Treatment?

There is no established course of therapy or antiviral medicine at this time. Since most instances are minor, painkillers or medication to treat symptoms are used to treat them.

The greatest strategy for treating the infection, according to doctors, is prevention. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with contaminated hands, and frequently wash your hands with soap or hand sanitizer to prevent infection.
