Dreaming of a special trip on a boat in Venice? It doesn’t seem likely that it will take place any time soon. According to reports, some of Venice’s more accessible but smaller canals have dried up, frustrating visitors and gondola drivers.
If reports are to be believed, a protracted period of low tides is to blame for this unfortunate dry stretch. This has been attributed by experts to the high-pressure weather in many regions of Italy.
Imagine what this implies for a larger area of the city since these canals also function as streets if you think this is bad for the city’s tourism industry.
The city of Venice is car-free
The locals use these intricately connected canals to get around the city because there are hardly any roadways for daily travel. Many areas of the city have come to a halt as a result of these tiny canals being completely dried up.
Gondolas, vaporettos, and water vehicles are typically used to transport both locals and visitors throughout the city. The former waterways are now nothing more than a trickle and muck.
Many of the impacted canals are located beneath some of the city’s most beautiful bridges. Meaning, a lot of the scenic gondola rides on these smaller waterways are not occurring anymore right now.
Significant lakes and river systems have dried up in many parts of the nation as a result of this high-pressure weather condition’s reduced alpine snow melt. Experts speculate that the issue is related to global warming and unusual weather changes; Venice only recently experienced significant flooding, which was also the city’s worst flood in 50 years.
But there is still some optimism. The larger, major waterways like the Grand and Giudecca canals in Venice are operating regularly even though the smaller canals are currently in a mess. If you do manage to visit Venice, take the city’s walking trip. Visitors can take themed excursions and uncharged tours.
The busiest months in Venice are April through June and September through October.
