The 26th edition of the World Energy Congress, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, served as the backdrop for a Ministerial Round Table Conference on April 24, 2024. Amidst discussions on energy innovation, collaboration, and managing the evolving energy trilemma trade-offs, the conference shed light on the transformative impact of the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference held in Dubai. Attended by esteemed figures such as H.E. Rob Jetten, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Climate and Energy Policy of the Netherlands, and Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the event brought together senior representatives from various countries and organizations.

The Union Power Secretary, representing India, underscored the nation’s pivotal role in COP28, positioning it as a key player in global energy transition efforts. Highlighting India’s commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency, he referenced the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which mirrors India’s objectives of doubling the global rate of energy efficiency improvements annually and tripling global renewable capacity by 2030. Mission LiFE, India’s initiative promoting sustainable lifestyles, garnered recognition at COP27 and G20 forums, aligning with COP28’s focus on transitioning towards carbon neutrality through initiatives such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and green hydrogen.

Emphasizing the complexity of managing energy transitions, the Power Secretary stressed the importance of inclusive approaches. He highlighted the role of technology deployment and cooperation, citing tools like the Revamped India Energy Security Scenarios (IESS) 2047 dashboard, which aids informed decision-making. Balancing energy security, access, and sustainability remains paramount, with initiatives like the PM-KUSUM Scheme and solar rooftop programs advancing environmental sustainability and job creation. The Indian Carbon Market further bolsters sustainability efforts.

Furthermore, the Secretary emphasized the necessity of supporting developing countries in accessing financing and clean technologies to effectively navigate the energy trilemma. World Energy Council India, a country member of the World Energy Council (WEC), has been instrumental in advocating for sustainable energy supply and usage since its inception in 1924. Functioning under the patronage of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and with support from other relevant ministries, WEC India continues to play a crucial role in shaping global energy discourse.

Against the backdrop of the World Energy Council’s centenary, the 26th World Energy Congress, themed ‘Redesigning Energy for People and Planet,’ represents a critical turning point for leadership on clean and inclusive energy transitions worldwide. Over four days, the congress seeks to explore the role of connected energy societies in propelling global energy transitions forward in an increasingly unpredictable and turbulent world.

In summary, the Ministerial Round Table Conference provided valuable insights into navigating the energy trilemma, showcasing India’s proactive stance in driving global energy transition efforts. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and sustainability, collaborative initiatives and inclusive strategies will be instrumental in shaping a more resilient and equitable energy future for all.
