Following the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results, the newly elected MPs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convened a meeting to choose their coalition leader. This important gathering took place at the Samvidhan Sadan in the Parliament building on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with enthusiastic chants of “Modi Modi” as he arrived and paid his respects to the Constitution of India by touching the book to his forehead.
BJP MP Rajnath Singh proposed Narendra Modi as the leader of the NDA’s parliamentary party, a motion that was unanimously approved, setting the stage for Modi to serve as Prime Minister for a third term. In his address, Singh congratulated the newly elected MPs and emphasized the suitability of Modi for the leadership role. “I believe that PM Narendra Modi’s name is the most suitable for all these posts,” Singh remarked.
The proposal received broad support, with endorsements from key figures such as Amit Shah, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, Janata Dal-Secular leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) Chief Ajit Pawar, and Lok Janshakti Party Chief Chirag Paswan. Naidu highlighted the necessity of balancing regional aspirations with national interests to ensure comprehensive development across all societal levels.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar expressed strong support for Modi, stating, “We will all stand with Narendra Modi in all his decisions every day.” During the meeting, Kumar attempted to touch Modi’s feet in a gesture of respect, which Modi quickly prevented. According to BJP leader Pralhad Patel, Modi is set to take the oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term at 6 pm on June 9.
The Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday that the BJP won 240 seats, and with its allies, the NDA’s total reaches 293 seats. TDP, which won 16 seats, and JD(U), with 12 seats, have extended their support to the NDA, solidifying its majority.
In contrast, the opposition INDIA bloc secured 234 MPs in the new parliament, with Congress winning 99 seats. This election has reaffirmed Modi’s leadership and set the political landscape for the coming term.
