On Saturday, June 8, Pakistan expressed a strong desire to cultivate cordial and cooperative relationships with all its neighboring countries, specifically mentioning India. The Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, emphasized the country’s wish to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue. This statement came just a day before Narendra Modi was to be sworn in as India’s prime minister for a third consecutive term. Modi’s party, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had recently secured 293 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, paving the way for this historic third term.
When asked if Pakistan had congratulated Modi on his election victory, Baloch stated that it was the prerogative of Indian citizens to choose their leadership. She also mentioned that since the new government had not yet been sworn in, it would be premature to discuss sending formal congratulations.
Baloch further reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to constructive dialogue with India, highlighting that the country has always aimed for cooperative relations with its neighbors. She underscored the importance of addressing all outstanding issues through engagement, including the long-standing dispute over Jammu and Kashmir.
India, on its part, has consistently shown a willingness to maintain cordial relations with Pakistan. However, it has stressed that the responsibility for creating a terror-free and peaceful environment lies with Islamabad. India’s Foreign Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has previously stated that while India has never closed the door to talks with Pakistan, discussions should prioritize the issue of terrorism. Jaishankar pointed out that with numerous terrorist camps in Pakistan, addressing terrorism should be central to any conversation between the two nations.
As preparations were underway for Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, set for 7:15 PM on June 9, the focus was on the future of India-Pakistan relations. Indian President Droupadi Murmu was scheduled to administer the oath of office and secrecy to Prime Minister Modi and his Union Council of Ministers. The event was marked by heightened security measures, including a multi-layered security system and a no-fly zone over Delhi.
Baloch’s remarks highlight Pakistan’s readiness to engage in dialogue and resolve issues peacefully, reflecting a significant diplomatic approach towards India. The emphasis on constructive dialogue and cooperative ties underscores Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability and peace.
