In the wake of a terrorist ambush that claimed the lives of five soldiers in the Kathua district, security along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been significantly intensified. The Indian Army has confirmed an ongoing operation as troops engage with the assailants responsible for the attack.

On Monday afternoon, an army convoy on a routine patrol along the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road, approximately 150 kilometers from Kathua, came under attack. Terrorists launched their assault by hurling a grenade and opening fire on the vehicles. Despite a strong counter-response from the soldiers, the militants managed to escape into the dense forest, officials reported. This attack, near the border with Pakistan, has underscored the persistent cross-border security challenges.

Sources indicate that the terrorists employed American-made M-4 assault rifles and Chinese steel bullets, weapons commonly used by the Pakistani military. There are also reports suggesting the involvement of a local informant who may have aided the terrorists.

In response to the attack, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Jammu and Kashmir police have been deployed along NH-44 in Udhampur. A multi-layered security system has been established to ensure the safety of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims traveling through Udhampur.

The ambush not only resulted in the deaths of five soldiers but also left five others injured, who have since been transferred to the Military Hospital in Pathankot for further treatment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his deep condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), he said, “I am deeply anguished at the loss of five of our brave Indian Army Soldiers in a terrorist attack in Badnota, Kathua (J&K).” He also mentioned that counter-terrorist operations are underway to restore peace and order in the region and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured soldiers.

The attack in Kathua is the latest in a series of terrorist activities in the region. Since June 9, there have been attacks at four different locations in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda, resulting in the deaths of nine pilgrims and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan. Additionally, one civilian and at least seven security personnel have been injured. In response to the escalating violence, Union Home Minister Amit Shah previously convened a security review meeting, instructing all security agencies to operate with heightened vigilance and ensure swift coordination to respond to threats.

As the nation mourns the loss of its soldiers, the government and security forces are on high alert, determined to thwart further terrorist activities and maintain the safety and security of the region. The increased security measures along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway reflect a robust commitment to preventing further attacks and protecting the lives of civilians and military personnel alike. The tragic events in Kathua serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, necessitating constant vigilance and proactive measures to combat terrorism
