Court Denies Bail to Man Accused of Creating Obscene Deepfake Videos of Amitabh Bachchan

On Wednesday, a local court rejected the anticipatory bail application of Abhijit Patil, a man from Uttarakhand, accused of uploading obscene deepfake videos of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan on social media. Patil, who operates an Ayurveda medicine firm in Rishikesh, sought pre-arrest bail, which was denied by Sessions Judge V. M. Pathade. The detailed order has yet to be released.
Patil allegedly created and disseminated these deepfake videos to promote products related to sexual health. Following the registration of a case against him, Patil applied for anticipatory bail, claiming that the allegations were “baseless, false, and fabricated” and asserting his innocence.
The police opposed his bail plea, arguing that granting bail in such cases could embolden cybercriminals. They emphasized that individuals who engage in identity theft of celebrities and create fake obscene videos often assume they will easily secure bail, which encourages such illegal activities. Special Public Prosecutor Iqbal Solkar stressed that granting bail to Patil would hinder the ongoing investigation. The prosecution also argued that the obscene videos had significantly damaged Bachchan’s image globally.
In a related incident, Bachchan’s legal team filed a complaint with the Mumbai Cyber Police on May 4 after discovering several deepfake videos that depicted the actor promoting Patil’s products using explicit language.
