Britain’s Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, garnered a standing ovation as she made a rare public appearance at the Wimbledon Championships on Sunday. This appearance was particularly significant as it followed her recent cancer diagnosis and subsequent abdominal surgery earlier this year.

A known tennis enthusiast and player, the senior royal was accompanied by her nine-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, and her sister, Pippa Matthews. They took their seats in the Royal Box to witness the men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

In her capacity as the Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016, Princess Kate was scheduled to present the coveted Wimbledon trophy to this year’s Grand Slam winner. “Great to be back at Wimbledon! There’s nothing quite like The Championships,” her official Kensington Palace account posted on X, alongside images of the Princess of Wales meeting the players.

Arriving less than an hour before the final began on Sunday afternoon, Princess Kate was seen engaging with the crowd, smiling broadly, and waving. She also took the time to meet players, including Britain’s own Emma Raducanu. Throughout the match, she was seen intermittently speaking with her daughter, Princess Charlotte.

The Royal Box was filled with a star-studded audience, including actors Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Zendaya, Jamie Dornan, his wife Amelia Warner, and Benedict Cumberbatch. This public appearance marked only the second official engagement for the princess since she revealed her ongoing preventative chemotherapy following a cancer diagnosis.

Last month, Princess Kate attended King Charles III’s annual birthday parade, known as Trooping the Colour. She joined her father-in-law, husband Prince William, and their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the traditional photograph. This event was her first official royal engagement since undergoing abdominal surgery earlier in the year. In March, she had taken to social media to reveal her diagnosis of an undisclosed form of cancer.

Ahead of her June appearance, Princess Kate issued a statement emphasizing her intent to take things slow to allow her body time to heal. “As anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” she said, noting that her treatment would continue for a few more months. “I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal.”

While Princess Kate graced the tennis courts in London, Prince William was in Berlin to watch England face off against Spain in the Euro 2024 finals in Germany. As President of the Football Association (FA), the 42-year-old Prince of Wales has been an enthusiastic supporter of the England football team, known as the Three Lions, throughout the tournament. England’s progression to their first Euros final on foreign soil earlier in the week was a historic achievement, and Prince William’s presence was a significant morale booster for the team.

Princess Kate’s resilience and grace in the face of her health challenges have been a source of inspiration for many. Her appearance at Wimbledon, a venue she loves dearly, highlighted her enduring spirit and commitment to her royal duties despite personal trials. As she continues her recovery, her public engagements are met with admiration and support from the public, reaffirming her beloved status as the Princess of Wales.
