President Droupadi Murmu received the prestigious ‘Companion of the Order’ of Fiji, the highest civilian award in the country, on Tuesday. In expressing her gratitude, President Murmu emphasized the strong ties between India and Fiji and reaffirmed India’s commitment to partnering with Fiji to build a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous nation.

The honor was conferred by Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, reflecting the deep friendship between the two nations. President Murmu highlighted the shared values that unite India and Fiji, including their vibrant democracies, diverse societies, and commitments to human equality and individual rights. She praised Fiji’s respect for traditions and customs and its multicultural environment, suggesting that these aspects offer valuable lessons to the world.

During her visit, President Murmu expressed her confidence in newly announced projects, such as the Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital in Suva, which aims to address the healthcare needs of the Fijian people and the broader Pacific region. She also acknowledged the significant contributions of the “Girmitiyas” and their descendants, who arrived in Fiji as indentured workers over 145 years ago and have since played a crucial role in the nation’s development.

President Murmu met with President Katonivere at State House in Suva, where they discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties. She also held discussions with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, agreeing to build upon the historic ties and strengthen the partnership between the two countries. At State House, President Murmu observed the progress of the ‘Solarization of Heads of State Residences’ project, an Indian initiative launched in February last year.

Addressing the Indian community in Fiji, President Murmu thanked them for preserving their culture, language, tradition, and lifestyle despite being away from India for over a century. She commended their hard work, discipline, and values, which have contributed to their success in various fields. She also highlighted the Indian diaspora’s role in strengthening the friendship between India and Fiji and expressed gratitude to the Fijian government for recognizing the contributions of the Girmitiyas during the recent “Girmit Day” celebrations.

President Murmu discussed the initiatives launched by the Indian government to deepen ties with the Indian diaspora, such as the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card and the “Know India Programme,” which aim to connect the younger generation of migrant families with their Indian roots.

From Fiji, President Murmu is scheduled to visit New Zealand and Timor-Leste as part of her six-day, three-nation tour, which aims to further India’s Act East Policy. This visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.

This honor not only highlights the enduring bond between India and Fiji but also marks a significant milestone in President Murmu’s efforts to reinforce India’s diplomatic relationships globally. As she continues her tour, the focus remains on building partnerships and fostering mutual growth and development with countries in the region.
