“Selling Of Bodies”: Huge Claim Made Against Former RG Kar Hospital Chief Sandip Ghosh

Sandip Ghosh, the former head of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, is embroiled in a series of severe allegations, adding to the controversy surrounding him in connection with the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor. The accusations, made by Akhtar Ali, who was the Deputy Medical Superintendent at RG Kar and now holds the same position at Murshidabad Medical College, paint a damning picture of corruption and unethical practices under Ghosh’s leadership.
Ali has accused Ghosh of engaging in corruption and trafficking in bodies and biomedical waste. He revealed that he had filed multiple complaints with the Vigilance Commission and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, although he claimed that attempts to register a police case were met with resistance. Ali alleged that Ghosh sold biomedical waste, including used syringes and medical gloves, to Bangladeshi citizens, a blatant violation of disinfection norms. A security officer identified as Khan was allegedly involved in this illegal activity.
Further deepening the scandal, Ali accused Ghosh of illegally selling bodies, a claim that was reportedly supported by the Forensic Medicine Head and complaints from the families of the deceased. However, despite these serious allegations, Ali suggested that no significant action was taken against Ghosh. He also accused Ghosh of accepting bribes amounting to 20 percent of work orders and deliberately failing students, describing him as a “mafia person.”
Ali’s accusations extend beyond Ghosh’s professional conduct, as he also filed a criminal case against Ghosh in the Calcutta High Court. Ali expressed frustration that authorities had not taken action against Ghosh, despite the severity of the allegations. He mentioned that his attempts to file a First Information Report (FIR) were rebuffed by the police, adding to the perception of Ghosh’s influence and power.
Ghosh has been a central figure in the investigation surrounding the rape and murder of a junior doctor, an incident that has shocked the medical community and the public. His resignation from RG Kar Hospital, citing moral responsibility, was followed by a controversial appointment to head the Calcutta National Medical College. This appointment, which occurred within hours of his resignation, raised eyebrows and prompted questions from the Calcutta High Court.
The High Court, led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, criticized the decision to reappoint Ghosh so swiftly, suggesting that he should be on leave rather than being rewarded with another prominent position. The court also questioned whether the ruling Trinamool Congress was protecting Ghosh, given the rapidity of his new appointment despite the ongoing investigation.
Since the High Court’s intervention, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, grilling Ghosh for over 60 hours in the past few days. The Supreme Court has also weighed in, questioning Ghosh’s reappointment and the delay in registering a police case after the discovery of the junior doctor’s body.
Amid the mounting allegations and the ongoing investigations, the state government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has ordered a special police team to probe the claims against Ghosh. Additionally, Ghosh could face further legal trouble for allegedly disclosing the identity of the slain doctor, a move that could violate legal protections for victims.
As the investigation continues, the full extent of Ghosh’s alleged misconduct remains to be seen, but the accusations against him have already cast a long shadow over his career and the institutions he once led.
