During his official visit to the United States, India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, toured the Naval Surface Warfare Centre at Carderock, where he observed groundbreaking experiments and state-of-the-art facilities. In a statement shared on social media platform X, Singh expressed optimism about the potential for increased collaboration between India and the US in the defence sector. He highlighted the mutual benefits both nations could gain from each other’s technological advancements and shared experiences.
Singh’s visit to Carderock is part of his broader four-day mission in the US, where he is engaging with senior leaders from American defence companies. At an industry roundtable organized by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, Singh outlined emerging opportunities for co-development and co-production within India’s defence industry. His emphasis on collaboration underscores India’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that bolster its defence capabilities.
The Indian government has implemented progressive reforms to attract foreign investment in its defence sector. These reforms have encouraged numerous Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), particularly from the US, to establish manufacturing operations in India. This includes the formation of joint ventures and the positioning of India as an alternative export base. A significant example of this growing collaboration is the planned co-production of GE 414 aero-engines in India, a milestone that marks the deepening of India-US bilateral relations.
Singh stressed that the keywords “partnership” and “joint efforts” are central to India’s defence industry collaborations. Unlike traditional partnerships, India is focused on creating a cooperative environment where both nations can work together on innovative projects and share the resulting benefits. This approach not only enhances India’s defence capabilities but also strengthens the strategic partnership between the two nations.
During the industry roundtable, representatives from leading US defence and technology companies, such as Boeing, GE, General Atomics, and Lockheed Martin, among others, attended the event. Indian companies, including ideaForge, Tata Sons, and Tsecond, were also present. These business leaders provided updates on their ongoing projects in India and discussed their future plans, offering valuable feedback to the Defence Minister. The discussions highlighted the significant interest from US companies in investing in India’s defence sector, driven by India’s skilled workforce, favorable investment environment, and large domestic market.
In addition to his visit to Carderock, Singh held a bilateral meeting with US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon. The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the recent conclusion of the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA), an agreement designed to enhance the resilience of the defence industrial ecosystems in both countries. This arrangement encourages greater collaboration between the defence industries of India and the US, strengthening supply chain resilience and ensuring a steady flow of critical resources.
Rajnath Singh’s visit to the US from August 23 to 26 is a testament to the growing defence ties between the two nations. As India continues to develop its defence capabilities, partnerships like those with the US will play a crucial role in ensuring both countries are well-equipped to address emerging security challenges on the global stage. The visit not only reaffirms the strategic importance of the India-US relationship but also sets the stage for future collaborations that could reshape the global defence landscape.
