Kerala CM and others pay tribute to CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury

Veteran Indian politician and General Secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sitaram Yechury sadly passed away this Thursday afternoon on September 12. At first Yechuri was admitted to AIIMS Delhi’s emergency ward on August 19, 2024 and was then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and remained there as he breathed his last breath at 72.
Sitaram Yechuri was a prominent Indian politician who held a seat in the CPM politburo for 32 years. The CPIM member was a representative of CPI-M in the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal between 2005 and 2017. He also became the party’s general secretary in 2015.
On Friday afternoon his mortal remains were taken to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the institution where his political career and affiliation began. And on Saturday around noon, Yechuri’s mortal remains were taken to the CPI-M headquarters at Delhi.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan arrived in Delhi on Friday afternoon. Today, him along with several politicians such as Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Kapil Sibal, Manish Sisodia and others paid tribute to the demised leader of the Left.
Earlier on Thursday, PM Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow and condolences to Yechuri’s family and associates as he stated via his X handle, “Saddened by the passing away of Sitaram Yechury Ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made a mark as an effective parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
President Droupadi Murmu also griefed on X by saying, “Saddened to learn about the demise of CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. First as a student leader and then in national politics and as a parliamentarian, he had a distinct and influential voice. Though a committed ideologue, he won friends cutting across the party lines. My heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his thoughts, “Pained by the passing away of CPI(M) General Secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury. In his long years in public life, he distinguished himself as a seasoned parliamentarian who was known for his knowledge and articulation. He was also my friend with whom I had several interactions. I will always recall my interactions with him. Condolences to his bereaved family and supporters. Om Shanti!”
