Everything to know about Kolkata’s new CP Manoj Kumar Verma

After the recent dismissal of the past Commissioner of Police (CP) of Kolkata, IPS Vinit Goyal, IPS Manoj Kumar Verma has been appointed as the new CP of Kolkata on Tuesday, September 17.

Vinit Goyal has been removed from his position of CP after the meeting between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the junior doctors who have been protesting regarding the justice for the unfortunate RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case and for their own protection at the workplace. After the meeting, Banerjee announced that Goyal would step down from the position of the city’s top cop. He has been made the ADG and Inspector General of West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF). Jawed Shamim, an IPS officer of the 1995 batch, will take over Verma’s position as the ADG and Inspector general (law and order)

IPS Verma, the 1998 batch IPS officer, was the Additional Director General (ADG), law and order prior to his appointment as the CP of Kolkata.

Early Life

Manoj Kumar Verma completed his primary and secondary degrees from Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country and Military School in Belgaum, Karnataka as he was the ward of an Indian Army personnel.

He completed mechanical engineering from Engineering College, Kota. Soon after his engineering, Verma started studying for civil service exams and became part of the 1998 IPS batch at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Career

 The former ADG started his career at West Bengal as CP of Siliguri in 2016. Soon after that, he was appointed as Inspector General (IG) of Traffic, West Bengal.

IPS Verma was also the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Darjeeling in 2017 and ADG and Inspector General of the Intelligence Bureau. In January 2024, he was appointed as the Additional Director General (ADG), law and order. While serving in this position, he called out the recent Nabanna Abhijan rally as “illegal” and an attempt to incite unrest.
