On Friday, thousands of people participated in a relay torch protest in Kolkata, covering a distance of over 42 kilometers, from Hiland Park to the Shyambazar crossing. They were seeking justice for the trainee doctor who was sexually assaulted and killed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city last month.
From 4 p.m. till midnight, a number of doctors, volunteers, members of associations for the disabled, cartoonists, IT specialists, scientists, and professors took part in the demonstration. The football teams Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, bitter rivals, were also present for the demonstration.
The torch march ended in Shyambazar in the northern section of the city, after going past Ruby Crossing, VIP Bazar, Science City, Chingrighata, and Beleghata Building More, Mallick Bazar, NRS Medical College, and SSKM Hospital, according to officials.
People carried torches that were on fire and yelled pro-victim statements as they marched. Additionally, a number of individuals were observed brandishing their cell phones and the tricolor.
West Bengal junior physicians concluded their 11-day sit-in at Swasthya Bhavan on Friday and said that they would be partially returning to their responsibilities, which included providing basic medical care in state-run institutions. The action was taken just hours after Manoj Pant, the state chief secretary, issued a 10-point instruction to guarantee the security, safety, and effective operation of the state health system.
They did, however, declare that they would not stop protesting until their five demands were met by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The administration has been granted seven days by the doctors to put the directives into effect. On September 27, the Supreme Court is most likely to hear the case again.
