The state’s Bharatiya Janata Party government has been under fire for the incident from opposition leaders and a number of Army veterans. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has stated that his government will take strong action against those responsible.
Rahul Gandhi declared that this “heinous incident” is a disgrace to mankind, while his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that the events at the Bharatpur police station had “shocked” the entire nation.
It was called “shameful and horrendous” by VK Singh, the former chief of staff of the Army Staff.Five police officers, including the inspector in charge of the Bharatpur police station, were accused of participating in the assault, according to a case filed by the Odisha Police Crime Branch. After the incident was made public on Wednesday, they were immediately placed on suspension.
“The horrific incident that happened in Odisha has raised serious questions on the law and order situation in the country… Under the BJP government, crimes against women have become completely uncontrolled and unbridled,” Rahul Gandhi posted on X.
Rahul Gandhi sought the harshest penalty for all those involved, wondering where the average citizen would turn for assistance once injustice flourished and found a home within the government apparatus.
Reacting to the incident, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “The entire country is shocked by the way the police in Odisha committed brutality and sexual violence against the fiancée of an army officer who had gone to the police to seek help.”
VK Singh, who ran for the Lok Sabha in both 2014 and 2019 on a BJP ticket, also called for the Odisha chief minister to act immediately against the police force and anyone else attempting to protect “the criminals in police uniform” in a post on X. Additionally, he urged everyone to pay attention to what the afflicted woman—the army officer’s fiancée and the retired officer’s daughter—had to say.
In social media posts, a number of other retired army officers condemned the Odisha government in relation to the matter.
The woman’s father, a former brigadier, urged that the police be arrested and fired for imposing their will on the law, while the National Commission for Women (NCW), which investigated the event on its own initiative, asked the state DGP to provide a report on the actions taken. While visiting his hometown of Keonjhar to commemorate one hundred days of his administration, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi declared that his administration will not think twice about taking tough measures against the offenders. The woman is receiving treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who oversees the Women and Child Development (WCD) department, first met her.
