John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton were given the Nobel Prize in Physics “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.” The goal of an artificial neural network is to imitate the brain. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are big groups of “neurons,” or nodes, connected by “synapses,” or weighted couplings, and trained to carry out certain tasks. These networks are inspired by biological neurons in the brain. An artificial neural network uses its whole network structure to process data. The original motivation was a curiosity about the functioning of the brain.
For giving the first split-second look into the ultrafast world of spinning electrons, three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics last year. This sector has the potential to improve electronics or help diagnose diseases in the future.
The 2023 prize went to Ferenc Krausz, a Hungarian-born scientist, French scientist Pierre Agostini, and French physicist Anne L’Huillier for their work with the minuscule portion of each atom that races about the center and is essential to almost everything, including chemistry, physics, human bodies, and technology.
Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor who established the Physics Prize, left a legacy totaling 11 million Swedish kronor, or $1 million USD. It has received 117 awards. On December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s passing, the laureates are asked to attend ceremonies where they will accept their honors.
