BJP wins third term in Haryana elections

News Mania / Piyal Chatterjee / 8th October 2024

By winning the Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 for a third term in a row, the BJP is set to write history. Based on the trends reported by the Election Commission, it appears like Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party will secure approximately 50 out of the 90 assembly seats, securing a decisive majority in the legislature. With 40 seats, the BJP was unable to secure a majority in the 2019 Assembly elections.

Major competitors Mukesh Sharma and Moolchand Sharma are leading in their respective constituencies, but Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who was contesting in the Ladwa seat, kept his seat.BJP’s early exit poll predictions indicated a tough fight ahead, but the party has recovered spectacularly. In the Haryana Assembly, the BJP is leading in 50 of the 90 seats as of 3 p.m., while the Congress is trailing in 35 seats. Many have been taken aback by the saffron party’s return, which has cemented its power in the state.

In his Uchan Kalan seat, Dushyant Singh Chautala, the head of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and great-grandson of the late deputy prime minister Devi Lal, was dealt a serious blow. Once seen to be a kingmaker in waiting, the JJP appears to have lost support as most of its leaders have been unable to seize power. The JJP fought 70 seats and the ASP won 20, but Chautala’s coalition with Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party (ASP-Kanshi Ram) did not yield the desired outcomes.

With a resounding victory of 71,465 votes, former Congress chief minister Bhupinder Hooda strengthened his hold on GarhiSampla-Kiloi. Congress’s achievements in the state took on a new face when famed wrestler turned politician Vinesh Phogat won her first election from the Julana constituency.Savitri Jindal and Devender Kadyan, two former BJP leaders who quit the party to run as independents, have also achieved success. Savitri Jindal, India’s wealthiest lady, won the Hisar seat, and Kadyan won in Ganaur.
