North Korea to stop all rail and road links with South Korea

News Mania / Piyal Chatterjee / 9th October 2024

The North Korean Army announced on state media KCNA that it will reinforce the territories on its side of the border and entirely cut off highways and railroads connecting to South Korea as of Wednesday. The declaration signals a continuation of the recent, until this year, rare increase in activity near the line dividing the two Koreas.

Despite mishaps, North Korea had been erecting barricades and landmines along the closely guarded border for months this year, according to a July statement from South Korea’s military.

In a statement obtained by KCNA, the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army stated that this was in reaction to war games conducted in South Korea, which it described as “the primary hostile state and invariable principal enemy,” as well as regular visits by U.S. strategic nuclear assets in the area.
