When a veena player performed a cover of Sia’s Cheap Thrills live, she combined traditional Indian sounds with a well-known contemporary song. The internet has been enchanted by a video of the performance. Srivani posted the video to Instagram, where she can be seen performing on stage with musicians playing a variety of traditional instruments while wearing a bright orange saree.
While the other musicians, clad in shirts and lungis, contribute depth to the arrangement and create a fusion that viewers couldn’t get enough of, Srivani’s veena steals the show in the video with a masterful rendition of the popular pop tune.
Social media had plenty to say. “This tune on the veena captivates the mind; it steals the heart,” a user said, while another added, “Surprised this hasn’t gone viral yet.” One of the users said, “Words fail to explain the calm this tune gives.” Social media users flooded the comments section with a chorus of praise, filled with words like “wow,” “wonderful,” and “mesmerising.”
Sia first released Cheap Thrills in 2015 as a single off her album This Is Acting. The Jamaican singer Sean Paul’s remix of the song made it a global hit, reaching the top of charts all over the world, including the US Billboard Hot 100. By skillfully fusing East and West, this veena rendition revitalizes the well-loved song and demonstrates the timeless power of music.
