In the midst of controversy, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution requesting that the Center negotiate with elected officials to restore the former state’s special status. J-K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced a resolution to reinstate J-K’s special status as soon as the assembly session started, but the Center revoked it on August 5, 2019.

In the midst of controversy, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly postponed its operations for one hour on Wednesday after passing a resolution calling for a discussion between elected officials and the Center to restore the former state’s special status.Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather postponed the proceedings for fifteen minutes after the resolution was passed, causing raucous scenes in the parliament as BJP members stormed the House to oppose it.

“That this legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal, the resolution moved by Choudhary said.

This Assembly emphasises that any process for restoration must safeguard both national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the resolution added

We reject the resolution. The Business given to us was that the discussion is on the Lieutenant governor’s address, he said. The LoP said there is a rat race among parties here but they all know nothing is going to happen. The Act has been passed by the biggest temple of democracy in the country (Parliament), he added.

Sharma’s comments agitated the treasury benches and noisy scenes were witnessed in the House with most of the NC and BJP members on their feet.

Members of the BJP ripped copies of the resolution and tossed the fragments into the House’s well. Sheikh Khursheed, MLA Langate, attempted to get to the well amid the commotion but was stopped by the assembly marshals. Members of the NC chanted for the resolution to succeed. Nizamuddin Bhat, a Congress MLA from Bandipora, claimed that the BJP MPs had dishonored the House. The rules have been broken by them.

According to Bhat, each member has the right to voice their opinions. The BJP members persisted in chanting anti-resolution shouts, though. In the middle of the commotion, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather declared, “I will put it to a vote if the opposition members do not want to speak.”Instead, the resolution went to a voice vote, and in spite of the clamor, it was approved. The BJP MPs rushed the House as soon as the resolution was approved. After that, the Speaker adjourned the meeting for fifteen minutes.

Article 370, which granted Jammu and Kashmir special status in 2019 and divided the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, was repealed by the Modi administration.
