Women voters high in Jharkhand

According to official figures released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday, the percentage of women who cast ballots in Jharkhand’s first phase of the election was 69.04%, higher than the percentage of men (64.27%) and the total number of voters (66.65%). According to the data, 37 of the 43 assembly seats in Jharkhand that saw voting this week during the first phase of the election saw higher female turnout.
“A voter turnout of 66.65% has been recorded across 43 Assembly Constituencies (ACs) in phase-1 of the Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024, surpassing the turnout by 2.75 percentage points in these 43 ACs in the 2019 assembly elections,” the statement from the ECI said. Women voters participated enthusiastically, surpassing the overall male turnout by 4.8 percentage points, underscoring their increasing involvement in shaping the democratic process.
According to the poll body’s data, the percentage of women who cast ballots varied from 81.59% in Baharagora to 52.02% in Ranchi. Kharsawan had the greatest male turnout (78.25%), while Ranchi had the lowest total and male turnout (52.89%). At 79.28%, Baharagora likewise had the highest turnout of any seat. This indicates that nearly 80 of every 100 registered voters who were eligible to do so cast ballots.
Additionally, women’s voter turnout was more than 10 percentage points higher than men’s in five assembly seats. The female turnout in the Barkatha seat was 72.63%, while the male turnout was 55.66%. This indicates that about 73 out of every 100 female voters cast ballots, compared to just 56 out of every 100 male votes. In Barhi, women voted at a rate of 73.30% compared to 58.23% for men. The corresponding turnouts in Kodarma were 57.33% and 68.78%.
Women’s turnout was 72% in Simaria compared to 60.64% for men, and 68% and 56.64% in Chatra, respectively. Male voters outnumbered female voters in six seats: Khunti, Tamar, Ranchi, Jugsalai, Seraikella, and Jamshedpur East. The male turnout was higher in Jamshedpur East, ranging from 0.05 to 2.44 percentage points.
Jharkhand’s capital city, Ranchi (52.46%), and the industrial city, Jamshedpur, were among the seats with lowest voter turnout. Among the bottom four seats with the lowest voter turnout were Ranchi, Jamshedpur West (56.82%), Jamshedpur East (57.86%) and Hatia (58.50%) – a suburb area near Ranchi. On the other hand, one of the most critical seats – with a history of extremist dominance – Garhwa (68.95%) registered much higher voter turnoutThe second and the last phase of polling in the state will be held on November 20 before counting of votes on November 23.
