A stabbing attack on a college campus in eastern China on Saturday left eight people dead and seventeen injured, according to authorities. This is the most recent in a string of attacks that have rocked a country that has historically had low rates of violent crime. According to a police statement, the attack happened at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing, Jiangsu province, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Screams can be heard in the background as the video shows multiple persons laying still on the ground, some of them encircled by bystanders.
A new graduate who was inspired by “failing (an) exam, not receiving a graduation certificate, and dissatisfaction with internship compensation” was one of the suspects arrested at the site, according to police. There is an investigation going on.
China, a nation of 1.4 billion people, has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the world, in part because of its stringent gun laws and extensive mass surveillance. This attack is the most recent mass casualty tragedy to strike China.
The nation’s bloodiest public incident in a decade occurred last Monday when a car crashed into people jogging in the southern city of Zhuhai, killing 35 people. About 40 more people were hurt.Censors quickly intervened to remove online videos of the attack and control social media conversations as word of it spread.
After a stabbing attack outside a Beijing elementary school in October left five individuals, including three children, injured, police detained a 50-year-old male. In September, a knife attack at a Shanghai suburban store claimed three lives and injured fifteen more.
