A guy was detained in West Bengal’s Jhargram district after reportedly raping a seven-month-old child in Kolkata last month, according to police. Residents in the Burtolla region of north Kolkata reported the event on November 30 after hearing the sound of a baby wailing on the footpath and alerting authorities, according to police sources. Police hurried to the scene and discovered the newborn near a residential area about 1:45 a.m., they said.

Shortly afterwards, two pedestrians reported their seven-month-old daughter missing to a nearby police station. After identifying their daughter, the newborn was transported to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for evaluation.

Doctors reported injury to the infant’s private areas and other bodily parts. Police stated the infant was evaluated by the gynaecology department around 3 a.m., and evidence of sexual abuse was discovered.

“Initial investigation revealed that the baby was picked up from the footpath, and taken somewhere and raped. It could be the work of some vagabonds. After the crime was committed, she was dropped again. We are checking the CCTV footage and also talking to the people of the area,” a police official told news agency PTI.

The Burtolla Police Station registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable sections based on the mother’s complaint. “We registered a case and an investigation is underway,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Kolkata, Dipak Sarkar, told India Today TV.

The accused will be produced before a court on Thursday.
