Zoho Corporation CEO Sridhar Vembu has downplayed worries about the increasing exodus of Indian talent abroad, claiming that it represents an era of tremendous progress rather than a reflection of despair. His comments came after RSS leader Ratan Sharada cited an article claiming that rich Indians were fleeing the nation, a position shared by former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, who blamed the movement on “tax terrorism, regulatory overreach, and poor quality of life in cities.” Pai stated that during the last decade, 55,000 high-net-worth people (HNIs) had left India. However, Vembu offered a different perspective, connecting connections with historical developments in Korea and Japan.
“I am not alarmed about the rising talent migration from India. Here is why,” Vembu stated in a detailed post. “Talent migration from Korea and Taiwan to the US peaked in the 1970s and 80s (Japanese migration to the US peaked much earlier). Talent migration from China peaked about 10 years ago. That was the time of rapid development and transformation of those nations.”
Vembu shared his commitment to retaining talent within India to strengthen the country’s technological foundation. “As an Indian, I work hard to retain talent in India because we so badly need the talent to develop India’s technology capability,” he stated. Contrasting India’s potential with the United States’ reliance on imported talent, Vembu advocated a model that fosters local skills for sustainable growth.
Reflecting on global practices, Vembu questioned the long-term effects of prioritising global rankings over local development. “Is it worth the bragging rights to be number one in GDP or AI, achieved with imported talent, but at the price of leaving your own people behind?”
