An apartment structure fell in the Bagha Jatin region of south Kolkata on Tuesday as efforts were being made to reinforce its foundation, officials reported.
The event took place at approximately 1.30 pm in ward 99 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation close to SC Mallick Road, sources indicated. They noted that no injuries occurred during the incident since the four-story building was unoccupied.
A company from Haryana was awarded the contract by the developer to reinforce the foundation since the decade-old structure had gradually tilted to the right, an official from the KMC stated. To facilitate the work, residents were moved to another building nearby, he mentioned. Nevertheless, the KMC was not notified about this, the official added. It is probable that the entire building will now be demolished, he noted.
Police reported that a case has been filed against the developer, who is currently evading capture. Jadavpur MLA Debabrata Majumdar stated that the task was initiated by the developer without any permission and severe measures will be enforced against him. In March of the previous year, 13 individuals lost their lives when a building under construction fell in the Garden Reach region of the city. The proprietor of a flat in the fallen building claimed that an extra floor was constructed unlawfully and inferior materials were utilized in the building process.
“We hadn’t felt able to protest since they possess significant political backing.” Now, what will occur for us? “We used up all our savings to purchase this apartment,” the woman remarked.
