India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill struck his seventh ODI century in the third game versus England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Opening the batting, Gill achieved his century off 95 balls after England elected for the hosts to bat.
The 25-year-old Gill also broke the record for the fastest batter to achieve 2500 ODI runs during his landmark 50th match in the format, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who reached the milestone in 51 innings. Batting in his 131st innings across all formats, Gill also achieved 5,000 international runs during his innings.
After scoring 87 and 60 in the initial two matches of the series, Gill ascended to the second position in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, surpassing Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Gill has a strong performance history in Ahmedabad, where he achieved his T20I high score of an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in February 2023. In his subsequent appearance at the venue in March that year, Gill scored his first Test century against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, making 128 runs off 251 balls.
The captain of the Gujarat Titans holds an average of nearly 80 at the venue over nine innings, with Ahmedabad being the second location where he has accumulated at least 400 runs, following the Harare Stadium in Zimbabwe.
