NEW DELHI – The National Council of YMCAs of India, through its Sir George Williams Education Institute, successfully hosted an impactful International Women’s Day Celebration on Friday.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually as a focal point in the women’s rights movement. International Women’s Day gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Globally, the IWD is celebrated on March 8
The programme on the eve of IWD brought together YMCA leaders, law enforcement officials, students, faculty and media personalities to celebrate the resilience and achievements of women while reaffirming a collective commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Chief Guest Renu Khantwal, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Guest of Honour Inspector Asha Sinha, In-Charge, Crime Against Women Cell & Parivartan (Change) Campaign; and Special Guest Ratnajyoti Dutta, a Delhi-based renowned international journalist.
YMCA leaders present at the event were Eldo N.V., National General Secretary of the National Council of YMCAs of India, Ashish Thorat, Secretary of Finance & Administration, the National Council of YMCAs of India, Shaji James, Secretary, of Movement Strengthening, the National Council of YMCAs of India.
The programme commenced with a welcome speech on the significance of the International Women’s Day 2025 theme – ‘ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment’ underscored the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for women and girls while highlighting the impact of self-defence training in empowering young women.
Eldo N.V., National General Secretary, NCYI spoke about YMCA India’s longstanding commitment to the development and empowerment of women through education, employment, and leadership opportunities by providing safe spaces, fostering community engagement, championing gender equality, and strengthening our society as a whole.
The highlight of the event was an inspiring speech by ACP Renu Khantwal, who leads the Crime Against Women Cell in the New Delhi District. She emphasised that women’s safety and justice must be at the forefront of societal progress and shared how law enforcement has evolved to include more female officers, ensuring greater representation and inclusivity in decision-making.
Encouraging young women to take charge of their rights, she urged them to break barriers and work towards a safer, more just society.
Media’s role & NEP
Ratnajyoti Dutta, a renowned journalist of international fame, delivered a compelling talk on “The Role of Media in Ensuring Women’s Safety.” Dutta highlighted the power of responsible journalism in shaping narratives, influencing policies, and ensuring gender justice through accurate, impactful reporting.
Dutta also shared the role of The National Council of YMCAs of India and how the organisation is working in alignment towards implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) of the Government of India on the ground levels through their Project Sir George Williams Education Institution.
Self-defence focus
The event marked the culmination of a 10-day free self-defence workshop for women, organised in collaboration with Delhi Police. The workshop equipped participants with essential skills for their safety and empowerment.
A major highlight was the self-defence demonstration by female workshop participants, showcasing their newfound skills, confidence, and preparedness in confronting threats. Their eyes revealed the strength and confidence they had gained, making their performance even more powerful.
Their dedication was recognized with certificates awarded by the Delhi Police and presented by ACP Renu Khantwal reinforcing the importance of empowering young women with practical tools for self-protection.
Colour to celebration
Adding to the day’s powerful message, a Nukkad Natak (street play) by the institute’s students highlighted pressing gender issues and the crucial role of society in fostering change.
The celebration continued with cultural performances, including “Naari Nritya Shakti: Power Unleashed”, a captivating dance performance that symbolised women’s strength and resilience.
A poetry recital further enriched the event, paying tribute to the voices of women changemakers, honouring their struggles, triumphs, and unwavering spirit.
