On Thursday, OpenAI revealed an enhancement to the Memory feature in ChatGPT. The AI company located in San Francisco is currently enhancing its memory capabilities to not only retain specific details about users’ interests and preferences but also to recall and reference previous conversations. The company noted that the new capability will allow the chatbot to engage in a more natural dialogue with users, making it seem more like a companion. The new functionality is being gradually released to certain premium levels of ChatGPT.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the AI company shared the launch of the new Memory feature in ChatGPT. The rollout of the feature has started for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers around the world. Nonetheless, because of data privacy regulations, the firm does not intend to launch the feature in the European Economic Area (EEA), Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. OpenAI announced that it will extend the feature to Team, Enterprise, and Edu users in the coming weeks.
OpenAI initially launched the Memory feature in February 2024 for paid subscribers before making it available to all users later on. Nevertheless, at that time, it was only able to retain specific bits of information regarding the user’s likes and interests. Nevertheless, at this point, Memory is capable of not only recalling this but also referencing all of your previous conversations.
This indicates that when a user inquires the chatbot about a subject that was talked about the previous week, the AI will possess background on the topic and can continue the conversation from there. It is important to mention that, in AI systems, the memory function is accomplished through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Nonetheless, OpenAI’s method varies, as it provides a continuous user profile memory. This is probably stored away from chats, but specific technical information about the feature has not been revealed.
