India Declares Three-Day State Mourning Following Pope Francis’ Death

23rd April 2025

India has declared a three-day state mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and a global symbol of peace and compassion. The Vatican confirmed the Pope’s passing at the age of 88, citing prolonged illness as the cause. His death marks the end of a significant papacy that spanned over a decade and was known for championing social justice, interfaith dialogue, and environmental responsibility.
As a gesture of respect, the Indian government announced that the national flag will fly at half-mast from April 23 to 25 across all government buildings. No official entertainment will be held during this period.
India is home to over 20 million Christians, including a substantial Catholic population. Pope Francis’ legacy of inclusivity and humanitarian advocacy resonated with many across religious boundaries. The mourning period reflects India’s recognition of his global impact and the values he upheld.
