Supreme Court raps Madras High Court, tells Tamil Nadu to reinstate top cop

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court expressed surprise at the Madras High Court’s order that resulted in the arrest of Assistant Director General of Police HM Jayaram from Tamil Nadu in the 16-year-old’s kidnapping case.
The supreme court was reviewing a petition contesting the High Court’s ruling. The Supreme Court inquired why the state government had suspended the ADGP and directed the state police to provide a response. The highest court also recommended that Jayaram’s suspension be lifted since the officer was assisting with the inquiry.

“He is a senior police officer, why suspend him when he joined the probe?” the bench, comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan, asked.
The bench asked the state government to obtain the instructions regarding suspension and asked if the same will be withdrawn.
