News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 30th June 2025

Police reported that four individuals were shot dead when unidentified armed assailants attacked a vehicle in K. Mongjang village, located in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, at approximately 1 pm on Monday.

It is thought to stem from the persistent rivalry between Kuki militant factions. Authorities reported that three people in the vehicle were killed instantly, while a nearby woman caught in the shooting later died from her wounds. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that one of the victims was Thangboi Haokip, also known as Thahpi, the deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuki National Organisation/Kuki National Army (KNO/KNA), a well-known Kuki militant group.

No militant organization has taken responsibility for the assault, and officials have not yet verified the identity of the attackers. Police, however, believe that the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), a faction recognized for its strained ties with the KNO/KNA, was responsible for the assault.

Law enforcement sources knowledgeable about the situation reported that multiple empty 5.56 mm shell casings were found at the location, suggesting the utilization of advanced weaponry. Multiple bullet markings were discovered on the vehicle. The assassination of a high-ranking commander has raised concerns about revenge attacks, leading officials to enhance security in the region. Ongoing investigations are taking place.
