Tomorrow, July 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a tour of five nations to attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil and strengthen India’s relationships with important countries in the Global South.

This will be Modi’s most extended diplomatic trip in the past decade. The Prime Minister’s tour, spanning eight days and ending on July 9, encompasses two continents and features stops in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Modi will also stop in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia during this trip.

This marks Modi’s second tour of five nations as the prime minister. The most recent foreign journey took place in 2016, during which he traveled to the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, Afghanistan, and Qatar in a single trip. Modi made a six-nation visit over eight days in July 2015, including Russia and five countries in Central Asia.

During the initial part of the trip, Modi will travel to Ghana from July 2 to 3. This will mark the prime minister’s inaugural bilateral visit to Ghana and the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Ghana in thirty years. The MEA stated that throughout the visit, Modi will engage in discussions with Ghana’s president to assess the robust bilateral partnership and explore additional opportunities to strengthen it through economic, energy, and defense cooperation.

Modi will journey from Ghana to Trinidad and Tobago for a two-day visit on July 3 and 4. This will mark the first trip by an Indian prime minister to the nation since 1999. Throughout the visit, Modi will engage in discussions with the President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, and the Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He is also anticipated to speak at a joint session of the legislature of the island country.

The prime minister’s trip to Trinidad and Tobago will provide renewed energy to the long-standing and historical connections between the two nations, stated the MEA. During the third part of his trip, Modi will go to Argentina from July 4 to 5.

As per the MEA, the prime minister is set to engage in extensive discussions with President Javier Milei to strengthen the India-Argentina partnership in vital sectors such as defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade, and investment. In the fourth part of his trip, Modi will visit Brazil at the request of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The prime minister is set to travel to Brazil from July 5 to 8, 2025, to participate in the 17th BRICS summit, after which a state visit will occur. This marks Modi’s fourth trip to Brazil in his capacity as prime minister. The 17th Leaders’ Summit of BRICS is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro. Modi is expected to conduct multiple bilateral discussions alongside the summit.

During his state visit to Brazil, Modi will visit Brasilia to engage in bilateral talks with President Lula on enhancing the strategic partnership between both nations in various areas of mutual interest, such as trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people connections, as stated by the MEA. In the final phase of his visit, Modi will go to Namibia.

This will mark the third prime ministerial visit from India to Namibia. While visiting, Modi will engage in bilateral discussions with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. He is also anticipated to give a speech at the Parliament of Namibia.
