Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian Diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago, welcomed warmly by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and dignitaries. He was honored with “The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago,” expressing gratitude for this recognition. During his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the strong ties between India and Trinidad & Tobago, celebrating the 180th anniversary of Indian immigration.
He praised the Indian diaspora for its resilience and cultural richness, noting their preservation of Indian roots. To strengthen these connections, he announced that OCI cards would be issued to the 6th generation of people of Indian origin, receiving enthusiastic applause. Modi showcased India’s rapid development in various sectors and highlighted the significant reduction of extreme poverty in the last decade.
He projected India’s ascent to one of the top three global economies, mentioning National Missions on AI, Semiconductor, and Quantum Computing as growth catalysts. He expressed hope for the adoption of UPI-based digital payments in Trinidad & Tobago. Reflecting on the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, he reiterated India’s support for Trinidad & Tobago’s development. The event, attended by over 4,000 people, featured captivating cultural performances from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation and other groups.
