In a significant step to preserve cinematic heritage, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government in Pakistan has earmarked Rs 33 million for the restoration of the ancestral homes of two legendary Bollywood actors—Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. These historic residences, located in the old city area of Peshawar, are not just architectural landmarks but symbols of a shared cultural history that predates the partition of India and Pakistan.

The decision to release the funds was formally approved during a high-level meeting chaired by KP’s Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and the provincial adviser for tourism and archaeology, Zahid Khan Shinwari. The move reflects the government’s broader strategy to promote cultural tourism and preserve historical sites linked to personalities who have made a global impact.

Both the Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor houses have long suffered from neglect and structural deterioration. Crumbling walls, damaged roofs, and encroachments had placed them at risk of complete collapse. By investing in their conservation, the authorities aim to stabilize and restore these buildings, ensuring that future generations can witness a tangible piece of subcontinental film history.

The restoration plan will focus on structural repairs while maintaining the original design and character of the houses. Officials emphasize that this work is not just about bricks and mortar but about preserving an emotional and historical connection to Peshawar’s cultural past. The city has historically been home to several cinema icons, and the project is expected to attract tourists, film enthusiasts, and scholars interested in South Asia’s rich cinematic heritage.

Heritage advocates have welcomed the allocation, viewing it as a long-overdue recognition of Peshawar’s role in shaping the early lives of these legendary actors. Beyond its importance, the effort also serves as a subtle gesture of cultural diplomacy, acknowledging shared histories that transcend modern national borders.
