In a major development in the ongoing investigation into a large-scale religious conversion racket, Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has identified Chhangur Baba, the alleged mastermind, as a member of the RSS-affiliated Bharat Pratikar Sangh. The revelation comes amidst deepening probes into his widespread network, foreign funding trails, and alleged coercion of vulnerable individuals.
Chhangur Baba, originally named Jamaluddin, was arrested earlier this month for orchestrating a conversion syndicate that targeted women, minors, and economically weak individuals. According to ATS officials, he operated through his ashram in Balrampur, where many women were reportedly indoctrinated and converted through deceit and inducements. His associate, Neetu alias Nasreen, was also apprehended.
Investigations have revealed that Chhangur Baba had deep connections with the Bharat Pratikar Sangh, an outfit based in Nagpur, which is said to have helped him expand his influence beyond Uttar Pradesh. Multiple properties linked to him in Maharashtra and Nepal border regions are now under scrutiny. The ATS believes these were acquired using funds received under the guise of donations, some of which may have originated from foreign sources.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also launched a money laundering probe, alleging that over ₹51 crore was funneled into the racket to support illegal religious conversions. Additionally, ₹100 crore worth of assets are suspected to be involved in the criminal conspiracy.
Chhangur Baba has denied all charges, claiming innocence. However, testimonies from alleged victims suggest otherwise, with some reporting captivity, exploitation, and religious pressure. As agencies continue coordinated raids and interrogations, the case has sparked political and social debate over the misuse of religious platforms and the potential security threats posed by such syndicates. Further arrests and property seizures are expected in the coming days.
