In a rented residence in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, five family members, consisting of three children, took their own lives by ingesting a toxic substance, according to police reports on Sunday. The victims have been named as Vipul Kanji Waghela (34), his spouse Sonal Waghela (26), and their three children — two daughters aged 11 and 5, along with an 8-year-old son. The family originated from Dholka, a town located in the Ahmedabad district.
Authorities indicated that, at first glance, it seems the family took their own lives by ingesting poison in their apartment located in Bavla near the city.
The event took place in Bagodara village, and authorities were alerted at approximately 2 AM, as stated by Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat .
The SP stated that the individual, who passed away with his family, worked as an auto-rickshaw driver to earn a living. The remains have been transported to a nearby hospital for autopsy, the official noted. This event is the most recent in a string of comparable disasters reported nationwide in recent months. In May, a 42-year-old individual in Panchkula, Haryana, along with six family members, took their lives inside a stationary vehicle in Sector 27. During his last moments, he confided in a local resident that he was overwhelmed by debt and had no one to rely on.
The resident stated that the man recognized the deceased as his wife, father, mother, son, and two daughters, and confessed they had all ingested poison.
Authorities found suicide notes mentioning financial struggles; surveillance footage shows the family’s last movements. Police subsequently retrieved two suicide notes from the location. In the notes, the late entrepreneur reportedly cited financial losses and growing pressure as the reasons for the drastic action, while stating that he held no one responsible for the choice.
During the investigation, CCTV footage revealed that the family departed from their residence in Saketri in the morning, subsequently rented two rooms at Sector 12 Bhawan, and then proceeded to Sector 27, where their bodies were later found at night.
In a separate incident in May, a 40-year-old man reportedly offered his wife and children a drink laced with poison in Sangam Park, Delhi, before ingesting it himself. His daughter, aged 15, and son, aged 16, passed away while undergoing treatment, and he eventually died afterward.
