Israel Calls Up Reservists Ahead of Possible Gaza City Offensive

Israel has authorized the mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists as it prepares for a potential assault on Gaza City, military officials confirmed on Wednesday. The move signals one of the largest escalations in nearly two years of conflict, though the reservists are expected to report for duty only in September, leaving space for ongoing ceasefire talks to progress.
According to Israeli officials, the operation would deploy five military divisions in and around Gaza City, focusing on dismantling Hamas strongholds through what they described as a “gradual and precise” campaign. Most reservists are likely to serve in air force, intelligence, and support capacities, or replace active-duty soldiers deployed to the frontlines, rather than directly participate in urban combat.
Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved the expanded plan, known as “Gideon’s Chariots B,” authorizing up to 60,000 reservists. The government’s decision comes amid heavy international concern that an assault on Gaza’s largest population hub could lead to unprecedented civilian casualties and mass displacement in a territory already devastated by months of bombardment.
The call-up coincides with renewed mediation efforts by regional actors proposing a 60-day ceasefire. Hamas has indicated conditional acceptance, while Israel insists on the release of all 50 remaining hostages at once, rather than in stages, as part of any agreement.
The conflict, sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack that killed about 1,200 Israelis, has since claimed the lives of more than 62,000 Palestinians, according to official figures, the majority being civilians.
Meanwhile, reports suggest growing frustration within Israel’s reserve ranks. Some reservists accuse political leaders of prolonging the war for strategic advantage, even as public debate intensifies over balancing military goals with humanitarian concerns.
As the deadline for mobilization approaches, the fate of Gaza City now hinges on whether diplomacy can forestall another devastating ground campaign.
