News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 21st August 2025

The competition to be the next ODI captain of India is being led by Shreyas Iyer. Sources claim that Iyer is viewed by the selectors as Rohit’s long-term replacement as captain. The selectors for India’s 15-man Asia Cup squad, which included Shubman Gill’s comeback to the T20I team, passed over Iyer on Tuesday. Gill will replace Suryakumar Yadav at the continental tournament after being selected the tournament’s deputy captain. It has now been revealed that Gill, who just started serving as Test captain, will also succeed Suryakumar as the format’s leader.

India’s ODI squad may be decided as soon as the Asia Cup, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9–28, is over. Furthermore, both Virat Kohli and Rohit will be permitted to make decisions regarding their ODI futures. The selectors also wish to relieve Rohit of the responsibility of captain.

There have been rumors that the forthcoming white-ball trip of Australia may be the last ODIs that Rohit and Virat play. With a combined total of almost 25,000 runs, the question now being asked in Indian cricket is if 36-year-old Kohli and 38-year-old Rohit can play till the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Two of India’s best ODI players are Virat and Rohit. Virat has amassed 14,181 runs at an average of 57.88 in 302 games and 290 innings, with 51 hundreds and 74 fifties. 183 is his highest score. In contrast, Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76 in 272 games and 265 innings, with 32 hundreds, 59 fifties, and a highest score of 264.

Virat scored 218 runs at an average of 54.50 in five games during their most recent ODIs, which they won in the ICC Champions Trophy. His two most notable performances were a century against Pakistan and an 84-run knock against Australia in the quarterfinals. Despite having a relatively uneventful competition, Rohit came through with a crucial 76 in the final to finish with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00.
