Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, demanding a public apology after a viral video showed offensive remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during Gandhi’s “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar.

Calling the episode the “lowest point in politics,” Shah said such behavior was unacceptable and deeply disrespectful. “If Rahul Gandhi has even a shred of shame left, he should immediately apologise to the people of this country and to Modi ji,” Shah stated, accusing the Congress of normalising a “culture of hatred” in political life.

The controversy erupted after a man was recorded using abusive language against the Prime Minister and his mother at a rally in Darbhanga, where Congress leaders, including Gandhi, had addressed crowds earlier in the day. The video quickly spread on social media, drawing outrage from BJP supporters. Following the uproar, police complaints were filed in Patna against Gandhi and Congress organisers.

Shah emphasised the emotional wound such comments inflicted, recalling Modi’s humble background and the values instilled by his mother. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also condemned the language as “unbecoming and indecent.”

Congress, however, distanced itself from the incident, claiming that those responsible were not officially linked to the party’s leadership. Party leaders suggested the individual was an outsider who disrupted the event.

The row has escalated tensions between the BJP and Congress, with the saffron party pressing for accountability while the Congress maintains it cannot be held responsible for unauthorised voices at its rallies.

With Bihar’s political landscape already charged ahead of upcoming elections, the controversy has further sharpened the confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition, spotlighting concerns over declining standards of political discourse.
