The West Bengal Legislative Assembly witnessed unprecedented uproar on Thursday as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing the party of undermining Bengali interests and democracy. The heated session, meant to discuss a motion condemning alleged harassment of Bengali migrant workers in BJP-ruled states, quickly descended into chaos.
Banerjee, in a fiery speech, branded the BJP as “a party of the corrupt and vote thieves” and warned that the Central government would collapse soon. She asserted that one day “not a single BJP MLA” would remain in the Assembly, reiterating her long-standing charge that the party functions against Bengal’s cultural and political fabric.
Tensions escalated when BJP legislators stormed the well of the House shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, disrupting proceedings. The situation turned violent after BJP chief whip Dr. Sankar Ghosh refused to vacate the chamber following his suspension. Marshals were called in to evict him, leading to a scuffle in which Ghosh sustained injuries.
The ruling Trinamool Congress countered with chants of “vote chor” against the Opposition, further intensifying the row. The House eventually adjourned amid the uproar.
Outside the Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari hit back, accusing Banerjee of “murdering democracy.” He labelled the TMC cadre “goons” and called the Chief Minister “the biggest thief of Bengal,” reflecting the deepening hostility between the two parties.
The episode highlights the growing political polarization in West Bengal, where sharp exchanges between the TMC and BJP often spill into street-level politics. With Assembly sessions increasingly turning into battlegrounds, Thursday’s events reinforced the fragile state of legislative debate in the state.
