An operation against the Pak Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Tailban Pakistan, in the Orakzai district of the isolated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan, killed 19 terrorists and 11 Pakistani soldiers, including a Major and a Lieutenant Colonel.

Using intelligence on the ‘fitna al-khawarij’—the word the Pakistani government uses to refer to local extremist groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan—the military operation was initiated late Tuesday.

According to the Army, a “sanitization” exercise will eradicate any remaining militants in the region.  In a multi-service raid on a hideaway in Karak, another district in the violent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 17 TTP militants were slain last month.

The shooting injured three police officers.

And it came after 13 Pakistani Taliban fighters were shot dead in an earlier intelligence-based operation in Dera Ismail Khan, another district in the northwest province. Recent years have witnessed an increase in terrorist-related violence in Pakistan, much of which has been attributed to separatist organizations and the TTP, which is different from but associated with the Afghan Taliban.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP has increased its operations, and many of its leaders and combatants are thought to have fled to Afghanistan.

An operation intended to target a TTP bomb-making factory that allegedly used civilians as “human shields” resulted in the deaths of thirty civilians, including women and children.

In the last three months alone, Pakistan’s terrorism-related violence has increased by an estimated 46%. According to Pakistan-based think tanks, 329 terror attacks and counterterrorism operations have resulted in at least 901 deaths and 599 injuries, including civilian casualties.

The worst hit were Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which share a porous border with Afghanistan and were responsible for over 96% of all the violence in the nation.
