Google to Invest $15 Billion in AI Data Center in Andhra Pradesh

Google has announced a significant investment of $15 billion over the next five years to establish a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks Google’s largest infrastructure commitment outside the United States and underscores the company’s strategic focus on India as a key growth market for its AI and cloud services.

The new data center will have an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt and is expected to serve as Google’s primary AI hub in Asia. The project is being developed through Google’s Indian subsidiary, Raiden Infotech, in partnership with Bharti Airtel and AdaniConneX. The facility aims to meet the growing demand for AI computing power and will support a range of services, including Google’s AI models, cloud infrastructure, and consumer applications such as YouTube and Gmail.

Visakhapatnam was selected for its strategic location and existing technological infrastructure. The city is set to become a critical node in Google’s global data network, connecting India to international markets through advanced subsea cable systems and metro fiber networks. This development aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s goal to scale its data center capacity to 6 gigawatts by 2028, positioning the state as a leading hub for digital innovation in the region.

The investment is expected to generate approximately 188,000 jobs, contributing to the local economy and fostering skill development in AI and cloud technologies. Indian officials have welcomed Google’s commitment, viewing it as a significant step toward realizing the country’s “Digital India” vision and enhancing its competitiveness in the global digital economy.

This move comes amid a broader trend of increased investment in India’s digital infrastructure, with companies like Microsoft and Amazon also expanding their data center operations in the country. As the demand for AI services continues to rise, India’s role as a critical player in the global tech landscape is becoming increasingly evident.
