BCCI Orders KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Amid Bangladesh Row

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad, creating a major stir in the lead-up to the tournament. The decision comes amid rising political tensions between India and Bangladesh following reports of violence against minorities, underscoring how diplomatic developments are influencing sport.
Mustafizur had been signed by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. He was expected to play a key role in the team’s bowling lineup, particularly in the death overs. His release leaves a significant gap in KKR’s strategy, forcing the franchise to reconsider its plans ahead of the March–May season.
The move has drawn criticism from some quarters, with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor condemning the decision as “mindless politicising of sport.” Tharoor questioned the rationale behind linking player participation in the IPL to diplomatic issues, warning that such decisions could undermine the inclusive spirit of the league.
