BCCI Orders KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Amid Bangladesh Row

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad, creating a major stir in the lead-up to the tournament. The decision comes amid rising political tensions between India and Bangladesh following reports of violence against minorities, underscoring how diplomatic developments are influencing sport.
Mustafizur had been signed by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. He was expected to play a key role in the team’s bowling lineup, particularly in the death overs. His release leaves a significant gap in KKR’s strategy, forcing the franchise to reconsider its plans ahead of the March–May season.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the directive, stating it was issued “in light of recent developments” and assured that KKR would be allowed to name a replacement player once the release process is completed. Following the instruction, KKR officially announced Mustafizur’s exit from the squad and indicated that a replacement would be announced in due course.
The move has drawn criticism from some quarters, with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor condemning the decision as “mindless politicising of sport.” Tharoor questioned the rationale behind linking player participation in the IPL to diplomatic issues, warning that such decisions could undermine the inclusive spirit of the league.
This episode marks a rare instance where international political tensions have directly impacted player availability in the IPL. Analysts note that it raises questions about contractual obligations, replacement protocols, and the broader participation of foreign players in the tournament, particularly from countries with strained diplomatic relations.
As KKR and the BCCI navigate the fallout, the cricketing community now awaits clarity on who will fill the vacant slot in the squad. Meanwhile, IPL 2026 preparations continue amid heightened attention on how off-field developments could affect the game.
