Budget 2026 allots ₹42,100 crore to the National Education Mission.

In her ninth Union Budget address on Sunday, February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave the National Education Mission, also known as Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, ₹42,100 crore, an increase from ₹41,250 crore the year before. The Ministry of Education’s biggest program is Samagra Shiksha.

Budget data show that actual spending in FY25 was ₹36,288 crore, whereas the revised allocation for the plan in FY26 was ₹38,000 crore.According to government records, Madhya Pradesh received ₹3,434 crore, Bihar received ₹4,217 crore, while Uttar Pradesh received the most allocation from the Center in FY25 at ₹6,264 crore.

The North Eastern Region and Himalayan states receive 90:10 money for the program, whereas the Center and states jointly support it in a 60:40 ratio. When it was first suggested in the FY19 Union Budget, the central scheme—which strives to provide equal chances for education and equitable learning outcomes—only encompassed students in preschool through class 12.

Later, the plan was updated to incorporate the National Education Policy’s provisions.For FY27, the Education Ministry received a total allocation of about ₹1.4 lakh crore, an increase of over 14% from the FY26 revised estimate. Of this, the Department of School Education and Literacy had an outlay of ₹83,562 crore, while Higher Education was granted ₹55,727 crore.

The provision for PM SHRI, an initiative for transforming government schools into modern schools, rose to ₹7,500 crore. An investment of ₹42,100 crore was made in the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, also known as the National Education Mission, which aims to provide equal opportunities for education and equitable learning results.
