A heated exchange between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi marked the debate in the Lok Sabha over a motion seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla during the ongoing Budget Session of the Indian Parliament.
The motion, moved by opposition parties, accused the Speaker of conducting proceedings in a partisan manner and allegedly restricting the opposition’s ability to raise key issues in the House. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders argued that the Speaker must maintain strict neutrality to protect the rights of all members in a parliamentary democracy. They claimed that the opposition had frequently faced interruptions and limited speaking time during debates.
Responding sharply, Amit Shah defended the Speaker and criticized the opposition’s move. He described the motion as “unfortunate” and said it undermined the dignity and traditions of Parliament. Shah argued that the Speaker had followed established parliamentary rules and maintained order in the House despite frequent disruptions.
The debate saw strong arguments from both sides, with opposition members emphasizing the need for impartiality in the Chair, while the government insisted that the allegations were politically motivated. After several hours of discussion, the motion was put to a voice vote in the Lok Sabha.
