Google Maps will get more “immersive” navigation and an AI “Ask Maps” feature.

Google revealed on Thursday that Google Maps would launch a conversational “Ask Maps” feature powered by Gemini in addition to an improved “Immersive Navigation” experience that includes a 3D perspective, road data, natural voice advice, and other features.

“My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” is one example of a difficult, real-world inquiry that users can ask using natural language using the new “Ask Maps” function. or “Can I play on a public tennis court tonight with lights on?”

The function may also be used to quickly arrange vacations, according to the internet giant. “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes, any recommended stops along the way?” is one example of a question. 

After that, Maps will provide you with routes, estimated times of arrival, and advice from actual people, such as how to locate a secret trail or obtain a complimentary admission ticket. According to Google, Ask Maps uses signals, such as locations a user has saved to their account or looked for, to tailor its responses. Ask Maps is currently available on iOS and Android in the United States and India. According to Google, the capability will soon be accessible on desktop computers.

With the recent “Immersive Navigation” upgrade, Maps will have a 3D view that resembles Apple Maps and reflects surrounding buildings, overpasses, and terrain. Additionally, the software will draw attention to traffic signals, stop signs, lanes, and crosswalks. Maps is getting additional features that are intended to help drivers stay more informed while driving, in addition to the cosmetic changes.With the use of smart zooms and transparent structures, maps now provide drivers with a more comprehensive perspective of their route, enabling them to anticipate difficult turns and lane changes. Google has also improved the voice advice on Maps to make it sound more genuine. The trade-offs for other routes, such as a longer travel with less traffic or a quicker one with a toll, will now also be shown on maps. Additionally, the app will notify you of any real-time disturbances along your path, like collisions and road construction. Data from the Waze and Google Maps communities will be used in these features.
