Donald Trump reportedly told leaders of the Group of Seven that Iran was close to surrendering in the ongoing conflict, according to a report that described a recent call between the US leader and G7 allies. The remarks came shortly before the first public message attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei, who rejected any suggestion that Tehran was preparing to back down.

During a virtual discussion with leaders of the major industrialised nations, Trump reportedly said that US military operations had severely weakened Iran’s leadership and strategic capabilities. He suggested that the pressure created by recent strikes had pushed the Iranian government to the brink, leaving it in a position where surrender could soon follow.

According to officials familiar with the conversation, Trump told his counterparts that Iran’s command structure had been significantly disrupted by the conflict. He reportedly argued that the country’s leadership was in disarray, adding that there might not even be a clear authority left capable of formally announcing a surrender.

The remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East as clashes involving the United States, Israel and Iran intensified. The conflict has seen missile and drone strikes across several areas, raising fears of a broader regional war.

However, the narrative of imminent surrender was quickly challenged when a message attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei was broadcast on Iranian state television. In the statement, the new Iranian leader dismissed the idea of capitulation and insisted that Iran would continue to resist external pressure.

Khamenei’s message marked his first public communication since assuming the country’s highest leadership role after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. The statement was delivered through state media rather than in person, prompting speculation about his condition and whereabouts.

In the address, Khamenei vowed that Iran would not surrender and warned that the country could escalate its response if attacks continued. His comments signalled Tehran’s determination to continue the confrontation despite mounting international pressure.

Trump’s claim and Iran’s defiant response highlight the deep uncertainty surrounding the conflict’s trajectory, with global leaders watching closely for signs of either escalation or a possible diplomatic breakthrough.
