A plane and a truck collided at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, killing both pilots.

According to US media sources, an Air Canada Express passenger plane struck a fire vehicle on a LaGuardia Airport runway late on Sunday, killing a pilot and co-pilot. According to NBC and Sky News reports, the approaching aircraft struck a fire engine on runway 4 of the airport, injuring at least 13 persons, including two firemen.

Following the incident, a number of footage of the airport’s rescue and evacuation activities surfaced on social media. Unverified video also revealed damage to the plane’s nose. NDTV was unable to confirm the video right away. In the video, people were seen getting off the commuter plane while the front of the aircraft was destroyed and tilted in the air.

According to reports, a fire vehicle from the Port Authority Police Department struck a jet as it was landing at 11:38 p.m. (local time). A sergeant and police officer on the fire truck are in stable condition at a hospital despite having damaged limbs, according to an NBC report. 

At the airport in the Queens borough of New York City, the CRJ-900 airliner, which was traveling from Montreal, struck the car at a speed of roughly 24 miles per hour (39 kph), according to FlightRadar24. In the meantime, a notice from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) states that all aircraft at the airport are subject to a ground stop.

Without providing any specifics, the FAA notice stated that there was a strong likelihood of an extension and that the airport halt was due to an emergency. According to the website of LaGuardia Airport, every plane that arrived was either returned to its original location or redirected to another airport.

The FAA warned airmen in a secondary warning that the airport might be closed until 1800 GMT. Authorities have not yet disclosed information on the magnitude of the damage or the number of injuries, though.According to a ColLive article, the incident occurred while the aircraft, which was flying for small carrier Jazz Airlines, was traveling to a gate during a period of severe weather.According to US media sources, the conditions of the 72 passengers and four crew members on board the Bombardier CRJ-900 are being assessed. The New York Post reported that a number of Orthodox Jews from the New York region were on board the aircraft, citing sources. According to reports, the fire truck was given permission to cross runway 4 in order to respond to the United 737 Max aircraft that had declared an emergency on the ground because of an odd smell that was making the flight attendants ill.
