According to a report by China's official news agency, Xinhua, Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed a four-point plan to advance peace in the Middle East. The announcement coincides with the US and Iran discussing the prospect of holding more negotiations before the ceasefire expires following the breakdown of negotiations in Pakistan.

The story claims that Xi made the idea to Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, on Tuesday.

Four points are suggested by the plan. First, the idea of peaceful cohabitation between Gulf and Middle Eastern nations. In order to create a long-term security framework for the Middle East and Gulf, he urged the nations to strengthen their ties.

Second, he urged nations to uphold the idea of national sovereignty and stated that it cannot be compromised. He emphasized the importance of respecting the security and territorial integrity of Gulf and Middle Eastern nations. Third, he said that the international system, with the UN at its center, must be forcefully upheld in order to keep the world from returning to anarchy.

On Tuesday, Xi promised Beijing will play a "constructive role" in advancing peace in the Middle East, while China accused the US of acting in a "dangerous and irresponsible" manner regarding its embargo of Iranian ports. Following the failure of peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran over the weekend, US President Donald Trump has threatened to sink ships entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas in the Gulf.

Iran has essentially closed the crucial Strait of Hormuz, permitting only ships that serve nations it considers friendly, like China, to pass through.

Trump said on Sunday that he would hit China's goods with a 50 per cent tariff if it provided military assistance to Tehran. Guo Jiakun, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, dismissed those reports as "completel fabricated."

"If the US insists on using this as an excuse to impose additional tariffs on China, China will definitely take resolute countermeasures," Guo said. Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing next month for talks with Xi.
